Latin jazz from NY to LA

By Mark Holston

The charanga rhythm is but one of many Afro-Caribbean reference points for violinist Susie Hansen, whose approach to the electrified instrument will remind some of Jean Luc Ponty. Hansen's Solo Flight (Jazz Caliente) is dedicated to the memory of her father, who was a violinist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for almost 40 years. Her classical foundation has provided the young instrumentalist with impeccable technique, while her love of Latin concepts has produced a swinging, lyrical style that makes her violin speak the language of Latin jazz with total fluency. Hansen and her L.A.-based group achieve a rhythmic groove that's nothing less than hypnotizing.
